According to the latest figures, 79.2 percent of all internet connections are broadband.

The latest figures released by the ONS (Office of National Statistics) show broadband connections are up from 75.8 percent in September 2006 to 79.2 percent in December 2006.  Dial-up connections continue to decline, making up just 20.8 per cent of all internet connections in December 2006.

The research is carried out using figures provided from ISPs.

Broadband connection speeds

The research now includes figures on connection speeds that users are on, where provided by an ISP.  A small minority did not provide connection speed information and are classed as unknown.  The first of these statistics show:

Broadband Speed Percentage of connections
Less than or up to 2 Mb 60.1 percent
Between 2 Mb to 8Mb 32.5 percent
Over 8Mb 2 percent
Unknown 5.4 percent

The general trend appears to be that broadband usage is likely to continue to rise as providers tempt consumers with further offers and lower cost packages.
