Broadband router specialist AVM warns that users are not taking adequate steps to secure their wireless network.
Over half of the UK population is on broadband, and many choose to set up a wireless network with their router. According to AVM, despite two thirds of consumers saying that they are concerned about Internet security, only 25 percent actually understand how to secure their computer properly. Furthermore, only 7 percent use all of the security features available on their wireless network.
AVM says it’s the virtual equivalent of leaving the door or window open when you leave the house.
“If you’re running a wireless network without adequate security, that’s effectively what you’re doing,” said Matthew Tyler, country manager at AVM. “People need to be aware of the risks and take the appropriate precautions – especially when they’re accessing the Internet wirelessly.”
AVM provides some useful tips on Internet security at their security page.
Generally users need to set up some form of encryption for the network (e.g. WEP, WPA), change the default password received with the router, or at least change it to something that is not easy to guess. Using an up to date anti-virus and firewall package is also recommended.
For those who are unsure about setting up security on a wireless network, many ISPs and manufacturers of routers provide information on how to set it up on their website. For example, Netgear has a decent guide on how to set up wireless security here.
