In its nine month trading update to 31 March 2009, Sky boasted good customer growth in a tough environment.

Overall, the group added 80,000 net customers in the last quarter, with a total of 9.318 million households now subscribing to Sky services.  Sky+ HD helped the group to 243,000 net additions.  Around 600,000 existing customers also took up TV, broadband and telephony bundles as customers saw the cost benefits of taking all three services.

After adjustments, group profits were up by 13 percent to £589 million.

HD was the big winner over the last few months.  Sky says that dropping the price of the Sky+HD box earlier this led to an accelerated rate of take-up.  As a result of the demand Sky has already created around 750 new jobs out of the 1,000 that were announced back in January 2009.

Now that the Sky Talk service is closely linked to broadband, more customers took a combination of broadband, TV and talk.  Sky also offers phone line rental, which grew significantly in the quarter with 270,000 net additions.
