New BBC iPlayer channel coming to Wii

The BBC and Nintendo have announced a new, dedicated channel for the BBC iPlayer on the Nintendo Wii console.
Although the iPlayer has been available since 2008 on the Wii through its Internet channel, some users have reported issues with not being able to watch any programmes due to lack of compatibility between the versions of Flash used. Users that were able to watch programmes were not highly impressed by the quality either. The feedback received to the BBC prompted them to start work on a new, dedicated iPlayer channel for the Wii.
The new iPlayer channel will be available to download through the Wii shop channel without charge from Wednesday 18 November. The BBC says the new version has been designed to deliver a faster and better quality viewing experience for users. This probably means it will use more bandwidth from a users’ broadband connection, however it appears they’ve made the effort to minimise network traffic where possible.
That said, those who have never used the iPlayer with their broadband connection should ensure their broadband package is up to the job. Especially if viewing content in HD (High Definition). The BBC provides a useful tool here to help you check the speed of your broadband connection and see how it handles traffic from the iPlayer. For Nintendo, it couldn’t come at a better time with Christmas fast approaching and the Wii still featuring heavily on many people’s shopping list.
