Google to test ultra-fast 1Gbps broadband but only in a handful of communities

Search engine giant Google is primed to make a venture into the broadband market and build a new service which would be around 200 times faster than anything available across the US today.

Alas Google’s new super-fast service does not appear to be part of a plan to rule the broadband world. It will probably reach no more than half a million people so most of us will still only dream of having speeds of the 1 Gigabit per second Google is promising. This is because the fibre optic networks required will only be implemented in a handful of places. There are no confirmed locations as of yet but Seattle is among those being speculated.   
 
It is only a small foray into the broadband market but the potential implications could reach far and wide. Google is not aiming to compete with the leading ISPs, instead it is hoping to instigate a surge in competition to achieve the next big leap in bandwidth.
 
The prospects of what could be achieved with faster broadband are fascinating. Each leap in connection speeds continues to change the world we live in. The development of mobile broadband has literally brought the world to people’s fingertips.
 
Most ISPs have the technology and bandwidth available to provide much faster internet connections than the ones they offer but while this would be beneficial to customers it is not nearly as lucrative as using much of that bandwidth for pay-TV.
 
Google is hoping to highlight this with its new service. It also evidently believes that it can build a fibre-optic network considerably cheaper than the current blueprint as the service is being constructed at no greater cost.
